Featured in the exhibition ‘Indigenous Fashion Futures: A Living Archive,’ curated by Sreyansi Singh, her work beautifully weaves Ladakhi heritage with contemporary fashion. Sharing the platform with designers from Odisha, Jharkhand, and Manipur, Saldon presented a collection that pays homage to indigenous textiles as a repository of cultural memory and a catalyst for contemporary expression. In an insightful interview with ELLE, Saldon shared her journey, inspirations, and vision for Ladakhi craftsmanship in the global fashion landscape. Here are some compelling excerpts from the conversation: On Showcasing Ladakhi Fashion at India Art Fair: “Being part of the India Art Fair is an incredible opportunity to introduce Ladakhi fashion to a global audience. I’m excited to see how people engage with the intricate craftsmanship, heritage textiles, and contemporary expressions of Ladakhi identity.” On Her Work in the ‘Indigenous Fashion Futures’ Exhibition: “The pieces on exhibition are rooted in the history and heritage of Ladakh. Traditional garments like Lha, Logor dress, and Lamo beautifully showcase the intricacies of Ladakhi textiles and designs.” On Fashion as a Form of Political Power and Social Collectivism: “Fashion is deeply political—it represents identity, resistance, and community. By working with Ladakhi weavers and artisans, I aim to create economic opportunities and ensure that traditional knowledge is valued in a globalized world.” On Being Considered a ‘Record-Keeper’ of Her Ancestral Traditions: “It’s an honor and a responsibility. Our ancestors wove not just fabric but entire narratives of survival, climate consciousness, and cultural expression into their garments. As a designer, I see myself as a bridge—translating these traditions into contemporary forms so they remain relevant and celebrated rather than forgotten.” Padma Saldon's participation in the India Art Fair is a testament to her dedication to preserving indigenous craftsmanship while pushing the boundaries of contemporary fashion. This amalgamation is not merely a collaboration of techniques and motifs, but a celebration of the rich heritage and traditions of both Ajrakhpur in Bhuj, Gujarat, and the Ladakhi region. The narrative of this love story unfolds with the inspiration drawn from the heart of Ladakhi kitchens - the Thab, or traditional stove, where warmth and sustenance are shared among families. It is from this humble source that the motif inspiration emerges, capturing the essence of Ladakhi life and culture. Meanwhile, the intricate handblock craft of Ajrakhpur brings its own legacy, with centuries-old techniques passed down through generations, creating vibrant patterns and colors that tell stories of the land and its people. As these two crafts converge, a symphony of colors, patterns, and traditions emerges, weaving a tale of unity and mutual respect. The Thab motifs find new life on Ajrakh fabrics, while the Ajrakh prints carry the spirit of Ladakh within their intricate designs. It is a dance of cultures, each complementing the other in a harmonious embrace. APPLICATION OF MUD But beyond the beauty of the final product lies a deeper significance – the bridging of worlds. Through this collaboration, artisans from both communities exchange not only techniques but also stories, traditions, and dreams. They learn from each other, finding common ground amidst their differences, and forging bonds that transcend geographical boundaries. This love story is but the beginning, a prelude to many more chapters yet to be written. As Ajrakh prints and Ladakhi embroidery continue to intertwine, they pave the way for a future where diversity is celebrated, and cultural exchange flourishes. It is a testament to the power of craft to foster understanding, connection, and love across the tapestry of humanity. GALLERY
